I can't be arsed with iPhone [evilgrin]

Jamzi -

Wow that's really great news Darkwing :) :) :) whee we are finally coming into the 21st century ;)

Chonka and Deleerium - that sounds perfect if you could develop the i-phone app. It would be ideal if we could have something for each of the big three mobile phone platforms, to increase chances of gaining players via app. Then once we have done that we can go back and improve on what we have if necessary but all we need is for them to find us via app.

Do you need anything from anyone else in order to start with the i-phone app?

Darkwing -

if you need an age rating certificate, you might be able to use the one I have for android,

https://iarcweb.azurewebsites.net/Dashboard/Certificate/a7d79ca4-ed8b-4687-be52-b3aa620b4b35

Jamzi -

ooh cool you managed to get one [up][up]

Deleerium -

No - but I would suggest outlining responsive work that we can start doing on here. Without the site being more mobile friendly and no plan in action I worry our new and moved on rate will be bad [cry]

Darkwing -

uploaded windows app to store for certification.

Darkwing -

Windows failed certification, limited functionality [:(] Guess if we want to appear in the windows store we'll need a real app.

Jamzi -

Deleerium what do you mean by your suggestion “outlining responsive work that we can start doing on here”? Do you mean people need to say what needs to be fixed with the code of the game on the mobile version so coders can improve it?

With regards to the apps, we have the Android version now up (link to mobile version only but much better than the nothing we have otherwise..).
Are there any suggestions anyone has how we can progress the Windows and Apple versions or are they not worth the effort? It's a shame we don't seem to be able to do the same as Android for the other two main platforms as I am afraid nothing will happen with the others now as it might be too much work for someone to take on? Also those windows bastards took our money now (and there was money for Android to pay after all too but luckily both were not that much so we could cover it.)

Darkwing -

seems when windows 10 comes out people can install android apps on it, so we might not even need a windows app [:D]

Per 2. Issue:

I'm not sure of the total traffic in game but if it reflects my rough math and the DB queries aren't super heavy, the site could be hosted and load balanced on something like Digital Ocean. I've had sites that get 50k uniques a day on 1 sever and 2 load balancers with a total cost of $15-20 a month. The last company I worked at is currently still using the same server setup I made 9 months ago and they haven't touched it since [:|] Seems pretty stable lol

Sanzo -

Most important part of the To Do List:

Actually doing what you set out to accomplish [8)]

Jamzi -

Yeah that seems the most difficult part in this list and life in general :D Talking is one thing but trying (with possibility of failing) is another. I rather have some things imperfectly done than await perfection that may never come. For example, Darkwing is not a coder but he is a tryer, it took 3 nights of his free time after full time work, £35 of his own money but he got the “imperfect” android app on the store (and he also made the Windows version but it failed certification due to linking to the mobile browser version rather than being a full app, one out of two isn't bad though for someone with no experience). This will at least allow new people to find AatW just as much as a “perfect” app would do. Maybe new players will come via that route, maybe none will but it's something talked about for years and now something has happened.

We have several more tasks on the list we need people to take hold of in the same way. NO experience necessary in most cases, only some effort from individuals to do something constructive with their free time on the game, thanks to those that have already volunteered so far :)

Jamzi -

Need some help with this as I don't have time to play 100s of games so anyone who can take time to try one and post findings in here that would be great.

Let's try some rival games. Things I want to find out about these games is below, first we need to recon these rivals and then we can go posting in the forums of those we identify as similar:

* Do you have to download any software to play? (if answer is yes then report on here and quit that game as it is in a different category to AatW).
* If not - do you have to pay anything for any perks in the game and is there any advertising? (if so explain)
* How many players are there roughly?
* What is better/worse than AatW about that game?

Also I remember lots of past conversations about people making Orkfia artwork. Did anyone still around actually make anything? We could use a cool looking banner to use as a forum signature when we are on rival forums (we will probably get banned but still worth a try for the few who might see it before that happens).
Wasn't there also some shitty flyer idea (the idea wasn't shitty but the flyer was lol). Still a shitty flyer is a lot lot better than no flyer so if someone still has that link please repost that in this thread too. Then anyone who fancies a few shitty print outs from their home computer and putting them up in their local library/school/notice board has something to go at too.

in reply to Sanzo's post in the “to do list” thread (I am trying to keep that thread just as an easy reference record of the list)..

I am quite jaded/cynical also, but I've not yet given up as I also remember how this game started from nothing (and gameplay so bad the server crashed every few days) to somehow get 2000 players, other games I recently looked into still retain their players, we are doing quite some things wrong but we still have at least 50 people interested enough to keep coming back, which is more than 10x what the 3 creators of this game had, in the days before social media and many people online.

I think those 50ish people still around mostly want the game to improve rather than die too, it's not too late to save it so why cant we build it up again with the right inputs? Obviously some real changes (in the actual game) need to be made though else we would not have lost so many players. I cant solve those problems on my own.

I don't have all the necessary skills or knowledge (eg. art, coding, perspective of each player in the game) to go it alone, for the tasks I think need doing, also I don't have a lot of time (full time job plus part time degree after work plus just moved to a “project” house which we are DIY doing up) ...

I need help and hope, by discussing (which doesn't exactly take long), there is the chance others might help and speed things up, also there is no harm in reminding people what is happening/keeping communication open.

What do you think we/I should be doing? For me there are two main things 1) improve the game to make it somehow more accessible/fun for newbies, whilst somehow not losing the few players we have. 2) recruiting those newbies.

I cant do much about 1 (though have been trying to work to get new coders involved which would make that more likely). The second point I can do something about and started by making a list of some games that I will work through one by one to see what they have that we don't and telling players of those games about this one. That will take time though, so I post the list of games in the hope others might also help with this task.

Mazzy -

There is a good start. You layed out the basics, know who so far wants involved. I think the next step would be try to arrange a meeting time to brainstorm what to do first, then maybe get staff to meet and discuss.

Because these threads can go on forever, if there is no action its just documentation.

I agree with mazzie [up]

While waiting for a go ahead on the open source business, I'm recoding the interface and cleaning up the codebase. Want it to look pretty for the public and using tech interesting enough to learn I suppose. For the time being purely for my own amusement.

Yesterday I was actually looking at something with a mobile width. With a 2002 nostalgic vibe.

Anyone has a good golden dragon graphic on hand? Preferably in a circle to fit “orkfia” inside of it.

hardar -

The game need some serious revamp of design and gameplay.

The 3 most important are :

1 - Revamp of design : it needs some graphics, kids like graphics they don't like text. They also like candy but we have none.

2 - Revamp of gameplay : It needs to be more casual so people cab play wherever/whenever they want. Obligation of daily logins and constant fear of being killed leads to a massive leak of players.

3 - Massive communication to bring players.

I did a little draft on what the game could look like with some minor changes :

I can try to provide one buy the end of the day?
What format/size? Need a vectorial image or .psd source?
